The Firm
The firm of John R. Tankard III Architect, located in Waban, Massachusetts, offers thoughtful design and friendly professional service to their clients. Our practice focuses primarily on residential projects – designing new houses and modifying existing ones-with traditional New England architectural detailing. We provide comprehensive planning and encourage discussion throughout the design process so that each project is uniquely suited to the clients’ wishes and site conditions. |
The firm was established in 1976 when John Tankard opened a business designing and building cabinetry. The business has evolved into a residential architecture practice and includes work in the Boston area, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Virginia. Our work has been featured in Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Old-House Interiors, and the Boston Globe.
Personal Background
John Tankard is a graduate of the North Carolina State University School of Architecture and has been a registered architect since 1968. Prior to opening his own practice, he worked with architectural firms in Washington, New York, and Boston.
John grew up with an appreciation of the local building traditions of his native Virginia. His interest in British and American residential architecture has led him to assemble an extensive architectural library. He and his wife Judith Tankard, a landscape historian (www.judithtankard.com), share a longstanding love of the British Arts and Crafts Movement and frequently travel to Britain to study the houses and gardens of the period. John is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Society of Architectural Historians, the Institute for Classical Architecture, the Royal Oak Foundation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Lutyens Trust, and the Garden Conservancy.
